There are many players on the West Coast who are sportsmen but this year we are recognizing one such player who truly typifies the genre. John Sunia of the DEA Combo is arguably among the most powerful hitters in our sport but even his power pales in comparison to him as a sportsman. Whether he is player for his Major police team or his single agency team from Ventura, Johnny is the utmost professional player and friend to all.
Many times our sport brings out the fire in us and many times those are the uglier moments in our sport. No matter what the situation is, John stays above the fray and is always true to his happy and positive nature.
John is extremely knowledgeable on many aspects of our sport and will always take the time to discuss any of it with any player that has an interest in doing so. John can always be seen with a ready handshake and an endless supply of smiles and laughs.
In his time away from police softball, John coaches CBC Little League in Oxnard CA, coaches High School baseball at Channel Islands HS, and he mentors at risk children as a very respected gang detective.
Simply put, you are a better person whenever you get to spend some time with John Sunia and for that, he is our 2011 West Coast Shevy Wright Sportsman of the Year.
