Minimum Eligibility Standards
The PoliceSoftball.com World Series (and some other tournaments) will require ALL participants to meet the “PoliceSoftball.com Minimum Eligibility Standards”. These standards are very clear. All players must be a full time POLICE OFFICER, CORRECTIONAL OFFICER, PROBATION OFFICER or PAROLE OFFICER. The description of these titles are outlined below:

POLICE OFFICER: Must be full time and sworn or officially retired police officer whose employer is/was a governmental agency. A Police Officer’s basic duty includes the enforcement of laws, arrest powers and he may legally carry a firearm in the course of his employment. Federal Agents (DEA, Secret Service etc) with arrest powers typically fall under the Police Officer umbrella but it is the team’s responsibility to clarify the eligibility of a Federal Agent with PoliceSoftball.com.

NOTE: There are many positions and titles that technically qualify as having
arrest powers and are legally able to carry a firearm. If your basic duties are
not that as a peace officer, then you do not qualify. Examples of positions that
DO NOT qualify are:
1) A prosecutor with arrest powers and a CCW.
2) A. Fire Dept. employee assigned as an arson investigator with CCW and arrest
powers.
3) A judge with arrest powers and a CCW.
An elected official with arrest powers and a CCW that did not attend a police
academy and is not working as a police officer.
4) A Reserve Police Officer
5) A Police Services Officer
6) Part time officers
7) Military police

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER: Employees of private firms contracted to do law enforcement correctional duty must be approved on a case by case basis as determined by the tournament director and/or rules committee.

PROBATION OFFICER: Must be a full time or officially retired probation officer
whose employer is/was a governmental agency. A Probation Officer’s basic duties include the supervision and management of probationers.

PAROLE OFFICER: Must be a full time or officially retired parole officer whose
employer is/was a governmental agency. A parole officer’s basic duty

NOTE: If there is any question that a player may not qualify, it is the team’s
responsibility to directly contact PoliceSoftball.com and inquire about
eligibility of a player prior to participating in a PoliceSoftball.com event. PoliceSoftball.com reserves the right to make final eligibility decisions regarding tournaments under their direct control. PoliceSoftball.com may utilize the Competition Committee for any eligibility decisions.

We have always used the term "officially" retired. The word "officially" became the subject of debate so a few years ago we tried to fix the wording to include eligible to draw pension etc. And then that became subject to debate because in some states, you only need to be vested 3-5 years to withdraw your pension contributions. But that is not what we considered "officially retired."

Here is the verbiage for OFFICIALLY RETIRED:

1. "Officially Retired" means a normal or standard service retirement (in most states that is 20 years or reaching the age 50) or medical retirement.

2. Recognized by your agency as "Officially Retired" and has been issued a valid identification card indicating official retirement status.

3. Recognized by the state retirement board as "Officially Retired" and draws compensation as a result of the retirement.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The spirit of this rule when it was first created was never for guys who left the profession early for whatever reason. It was for old guys. Guys who paid their dues AND finished the race. For some the race is 20 years. For others, it is age 50. Every state is a bit unique but those numbers are common for most states.

Thanks to the competition committee for their passion and efforts in assisting us develop a more precise definition in order to avoid future misunderstanding.
