Every Spring for the past 17 years, Policesoftball.Com has hosted the West Coast Championships/WCC in Southern California and has used a variety of venues including: West Covina Big League Dreams, Cathedral City (Palm Springs) Big League Dreams, Chino Hills Big League Dreams, Riverside Big League Dreams and the past 5 years, it has been at the Sportsplex in San Diego. The tournament has always been a provided bat tournament and was among the first to implement that format.
This year, due to lack of participation, the event was cancelled as we did not generate enough interest to secure the Sportplex facilities. Instead, PS.COM management pivoted and only rented the Poway complex due to a smaller draw. The cancelled WCC was rebranded the Del Pickney Intra-Agency World Series. It was designed to recapture the spirit of the early days of police softball where teams were largely comprised of players from the same police agency. There is a different level of pride when you are playing both your team AND your agency. Only those who have done this know this feeling.
Early on, it appeared it would be sold out at 16 teams. But, unfortunately half of those teams dropped leaving only 8 teams to compete in the event. For the 8 teams that did participate, all seemed to have a great time. The unofficial player party was held in the open seating area at Petco Park where attendees ate, drank and watched the defeat the Pirates.
The home run derby took place on Saturday morning with CDC Lockdown/Supreme threads slugger Charlie Hinojosa beating out 20 other competitors to win without even needing a swing off. Charlie appears dialed in for the World Series XX derby where the winner walks away with a custom AR-15 courtesy of Bud’s Gun Shop.
On Saturday teams played 2 round robin games for playoff seeding purposes. It was very evident early on that the tournament featured a lot of parity as there were several one-run games and even a tie. Guest prognosticator, The Swami was even out of sorts as he changed his predictions 4 times within the first 3 hours of the event. Unlike many PS.COM tournaments where there are a handful of teams that could realistically win, it seemed this one had 5 or 6. If you don’t believe there was parity, consider this, only ONE team, LASD Red went 2-0. The next seed went to Detroit PSC who finished 1-0-1. Every other team had a tie or loss.
There were many nailbiters in the playoffs but the first two teams eliminated were the San Franciso Seals and Detroit PSC. Somehow, Detroit the #2 seed going into the playoffs were eliminated early and that was largely due to very sluggish starts to every playoff game. They would always battle back to create a see-saw affair, but it was always too little too late. If the games would have started in the 3rd inning, they probably would have won the entire tournament. In 5th place, two established CDC teams tied. The West Coast Lawmen who are having an amazing year tied with last years WCC Gold Champions Lockdown/Supreme Threads. One of the early favorites, the LAPD Blue finished in 4th. There were many multi-time World Champions on the team including: Braun, Delgado, McClement, Woods etc. and they used it as an opportunity to scout some young upcoming LAPD athletes. The Blue was one of the few teams not to use the “wildcard” as every player was an LAPD officer. 3rd place went to a very strong San Diego Sheriffs who looked a LOT like the open team. They had Kimo at 3B, Stoner at SS and LA Empire pitcher Heinen on the bump.
The championship game was an amazing battle between the undefeated LA Sheriffs who looked a LOT like the DEA Combo. Consider this single agency lineup: Mason, Mort, Ankeney, Toaloa, Kovacs and more… They had soundly defeated the Sacramento Razorbacks in the king seat game, but the pesky Razorbacks gave them a run for the money in the ship. The Razorbacks led most of the game, but their open team Achillies tendon was also their single agency Achillies and that was home run management. They blew through their home runs early and then struggled to add on to their lead. The LASD Red team chipped away and eventually won it by 1 in the bottom of the 7th.
The final results were:
1. Los Angeles Sheriffs Red- Intra-Agency World Champions
2. Sacramento County Sheriff Razorbacks
3. San Diego County Sheriff
4. Los Angeles Police Department Blue
5t. CDC Lockdown/Supreme Threads
5t. CDC West Coast Lawmen
7t. Detroit Police Department
7t. San Francisco Police Department Seals
MVP: Kevin Mort- LASD Red
All Tournament : Brandon Kovacs, Jon Toailoa, Justin Ankeney- LASD Red
Defensive MVP: Jakob Robinson- LASD Red
All Tournament: Justin Higley, Nick Pasquale, Shea Lukes-Sac Razorbacks
The prize package included a World Champion Obelisk (just like the World Series stone trophy), medals, custom pullover jackets, custom shirts from Elite Sports, a case of Skrewdriver whiskey.
Thanks to the sponsors, Jason Reeves from Blue Line Productions, Elite Sports, Brett Helmer, Jason Kendrick from Rawlings, and all the fans who showed up to support the players.
A message from Jeff: This event was bittersweet as I had hoped teams would make it a priority to honor Del’s legacy and return to the roots of police softball for a weekend. The lack of interest has cast doubt of this event or any event hosted by PS.COM next Spring. Hopefully, the younger players will gain more interest in police softball as this year tournaments across the nation (with some big exceptions) have seen a decline in attendance. With the cancellation of both the WCC and now, the Keeper of the Peace in Waxahachie, West Coast softball is struggling. But, for those teams that did come, I appreciate you. Thank you for honoring the spirit of what first drew Del and I to police softball. I look forward to seeing many of you in Nashville next week in what should be an epic event!
Del Pickney Intra-Agency World Series Recap
Show Me Classic Reignites PS
The St. Louis Show Me Classic was held the weekend of August 1st, and Mother Nature seemed determined to shut down the event, but the BMAC grounds crew was up for the challenge. It down poured on Friday, rained throughout the night and into the morning. The grounds crew worked hard and after two pallets of field conditioner, and a three hour delay, the tournament began with pool play at noon.
2020 Police Softball Hall of Fame Class
As everyone is aware, this has been year like no other. Tournament after tournament has been cancelled. There still is no word on whether the World Series will be going on. You won’t be seeing any awards this year. But, every year we have players eligible for the P.S. Hall of Fame.
Don't Call It A Comeback, They've Been Here For Years
The 2021 season opened up in sunny Tampa Florida on the East Coast. Everyone was anxious to put 2020 behind us and get back out on the field and play ball. It kicked off with the Friday players party at Whisky Joes on the water with a tropical feel welcoming everyone from the North out of the cold and onto the beach.
Connection & Enforcers KICK OFF Season with Championships
It’s that time of year, when everyone is excited to see who is playing with who and showing off the new uniforms. However; the past year has been a year like no other. This was the first Police Softball Tournament, on the West Coast, since the 2020 DEA Kickoff. Usually the tourney is held in Palm Springs, but due to COVID restrictions, Socal is still on lockdown. So the venue had to be change to Fresno CA. Instead of 5 fields, there was only 3. There was also time constraints due to the facility wanting league night and Saturday Civi ball. That meant long breaks in between games, and shorter length games. The 15 West Coast teams that showed up, didn’t care about any of that. They were just excited to be playing Police Softball, on the West Coast, once again.
John Scollo Memorial Full of UPSETS
This was a special year for Kyle Scollo. It was his first year to be able to play the full tournament on a team and enjoy the sport, just as his dad had. Kyle is graduating from high school in a month, and the commitment many of us made when John passed, was to run this tournament until he graduated. He now wants to come back and help run it, so we will keep it going.
Connection and Degenerates Prevail in Sparks
Thanks again to those who supported the 7th Annual Law Enforcement Desert Shootout Tournament on May 7th and 8th at the Golden Eagle Complex in Sparks, NV. A portion of this year’s proceeds again went to the Ofc. John Hege Memorial Fund (OJHMF.org). John gave the ultimate sacrifice on March 21st, 2009. As an organ donor, he lives on through those he was able help after his death. Please check out OJHMF.org and become a donor.
Great Lakes Conquer Myrtle Beach
The Thin Blue Line Spring National Championship was held this weekend at Grand Park Athletic Complex In Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Grand Park is the premier softball facility in the country and the only thing nicer than the venue might have been the weather. Beautiful clear skies and 75 degrees all day. The Weekends events kicked off for the 19 participating teams with a players party at Nacho Hippos, The taco buffet was almost as big of a hit as the ice cold beers at the open bar. A great time was had by all who attended.
The Connection is at it again, this time WCC
It had been 2 long years since the last Police Softball West Conference Championships were held. A lot has changed since that time, including the venue. West Covina Big League Dreams was no longer an option and Cathedral City in late June generally produces intolerable playing conditions (average daily high temperature 108 degrees). Fortunately, the softball gods must like the PS circuit because the opportunity arose to play in coastal San Diego County at the SportsPlex USA.
East Coast Championship—Max Elite is Beast in the East, Necessary Force Strikes Gold
The 2021 NY East Coast Championship showed once again what Police Softball is all about. With camaraderie at an all-time high at this year’s tournament, many events took place throughout the weekend to celebrate our brothers in blue.
2021 Hall of Fame Members Announced
After weeks of deliberation, our Hall of Fame committee selected the following list of names into the 2021 Class as Hall of Fame:
Max Elite Rolls Through Anne Arundel
The 40th annual lawmen classic went off with a little fight from the weather but as usual with a bang. Fridays party at Jimmy’s seafood was nothing less then perfect with the live music and amazing food and drinks.
2021 Season Award Winners
The recipients will be honored on Friday evening during our WSXVI opening ceremony. Manager of the Year: Ralph "Randy" Sampson, Maryland Outlaws Randy has taken a team that finished 3rd in Gold in 2019 to becoming a top mid major team in 2 years. As long as Randy is at the helm the sky is the limit for his team. Randy is a manager that has not only influenced this team to want to play the best but he keeps the spirit of police softball alive.
Dan McIntyre selected for OPOC Award
Vaughan Garrett hand selects the winner of this coveted award from the nominations submitted to ps.com. Garrett Metal Detectors will have a representative on the field during our World Series Opening Ceremony to present Dan with a plaque of appreciation and achievement.
'Don't Call it a Comeback'' WSXVI Recap
“Don’t call it a comeback. We’ve been here for years.” After losing the 2020 season due to COVID, things felt normal again in Las Vegas for Police Softball World Series XVI. The event sold out with 32 teams competing in Uppers (Majors & Mids) and 38 teams in Lowers (Gold). We scheduled for a 40 team Gold division but we had 2 late drops. In total we had a total of 70 teams from over 30 states competing over the four-days.
2022 Pre-Season Preview
We put this preview together off information obtained on the message board, from the Stool Pigeon, "word on the street", and conversations from team leaders. If your team does not have much coverage, it is because we likely did not get any intel on you. Which could be a good thing...or not depending on what you are looking for.
New York Teams Run the Table in Tampa
Once again, we kicked off the 2022 season here on the East Coast with the Brian Aselton Memorial Tournament and the weather did not disappoint. The field of teams was probably one of the most challenging and most competitive field of 20 teams that I have ever had at this long running Tournament including the Connection coming all the way from the West Coast.
World Champs Defend the Title in the Desert
For the first time in a few years, the DEA Kickoff was held in Palm Springs. There were several new teams and teams that changed their names. They were all ready to start the West Coast season off on the right track.
Aprils Fools Tourney is a Success
Teams found out the “April Fools” Tournament lived up to it’s name this year. Just when they thought they had enough players … April Fools … players either dropped out the week of or no showed all together. Several teams played short handed this year, but that didn’t stop guys from coming out and showing support.
In Honor of John Scollo
This year’s tournament was played on Friday and Saturday at Pierson Park in Wellington, Florida. I definitely like the Friday, Saturday format for several reasons, travel expense, host party convenience, etc. and Sunday as a travel or rainout day.
The Connection Prevails in Sparks
Again, a portion of this year’s proceeds went to the Ofc. John Hege Memorial Fund (OJHMF.org). John gave the ultimate sacrifice on March 21st, 2009. As an organ donor, he lives on through those he was able help after his death. Combined events like ours and the OJHMF Golf Tourney raised over $30,000 in 2021! Please check out OJHMF.org and become a donor.
